The standard
What a record has to clear
A record is only worth the standard behind it. APA records are set at sanctioned meets, judged against the published WPA and APA rulebook, and kept division by division — so a total is measured against the lifters it should be measured against.
Records are kept per division rather than as one open list. Age band, weight class, equipment category and tested or non-tested status all decide which board an attempt belongs on, which is why a masters lifter and a junior are never held to the same number.
The rulebook sets the terms: recognised lifts, age and weight classes, competition divisions, equipment, weigh-ins, drug-tested divisions, officials’ duties, platform safety and performance standards — including specific provisions for disabled lifters. It is published as the 2021 WPA & APA Rulebook (PDF) (opens in a new tab), so the standard you are judged against is one you can read before you enter.
Service and community divisions carry boards of their own. That is what the military, veteran, and police and fire lists are: the same standard, scored against the lifters who share the job.
